Don't Go Discount on these 2 HouseHold Items

Glad ForceFlex Tall Kitchen Bags, 13 Gallon (120 Bags)

Hello HouseHold Tippers!

I've told you before in my post about going discount on blenders,
not to do it.  I learned it the hard way- so you don't have to :)

Now for a couple of little tips about what not to go discount on-
in your house.

1.  Toilet Paper - this is pretty self-explanatory.

2.  Kitchen Garbage Bags - don't be lulled into discount garbage bags, they really aren't as good or strong and they will break.  Pay the little extra for sturdy bags- they'll hold more and won't tear!

Happy HouseHolds!

Is Your Eye Stinging? How to stop it now!

I love when people give me HouseHold Tips to share!
So when the Fabulous Miss S, and she is
Fabulous :)

shared a real-life tip she discovered, in a hurry-
I wanted to share it here- ASAP!

~ She was making HOMEMADE (and she has 2 small children... fabulous) BBQ sauce and measured out some cayenne pepper.  She then accidentally wiped her face
(not so fabulous) and got it on her eye lid.
She then starting shrieking, 'Ouch!  Holy burning eye!' and wiped her eye with a wet paper towel and it got worse (again, not so fabulous)!
What to do?
She took a fresh cucumber and cut off a slice -- placed in on her eye, all spa-like for a few minutes .....
And the Burn was gone!  ... And She look refreshed!

Fabulous :)

They are inexpensive (the one pictured is $8.88), you'll be saving money on paper coffee filters, saving trees, saving waste, and they are EASY to use.  Just put it in your coffee maker, and then when you're done, instead of throwing away the paper filter with coffee grinds- you just throw out the coffee grinds from this filter, rinse it, and it's ready for tomorrow morning when you make coffee again!

There is a lot of interest out there about 'adjustable' measuring
gadgets-
whether they be spoons, or cups... or something else.

A HouseHold Tips Reader, Tech Savvy Mama (who is Super Cool, a Great Mom and has a fantastic blog about all things Tech + Being a Mom) found another adjustable measuring  cup...

I, myself, have never been to a Pampered Chef Party, but what a great success story!
It's a MOM business, started in 1980,
and now... a $700 million enterprise!

Another Grocery List Tip!

Hello HouseHold Tippers!

We continue this week with sharing Tips from more readers!

Today, another great tip about keeping grocery lists during the week!

It's from April- 'It's All About Balance' blog and she added:

"My list is on a pad with a magnet on my refrigerator. It's the perfect place for remembering to write it down without having to go hunting or create clutter. (Then I copy the list onto my BBerry in case I forget it on grocery shopping day.)"

GREAT TIP!  Thanks April!

Put Your Recycling... AWAY

Today's HouseHold Tip is pretty straight-forward.

Put Your Recycling Away.

Make a Space For it.  And that space shouldn't be the back corner of your kitchen.

Create some room in a pantry or closet or 'mud room'.  I decluttered and organized to make room in one of my kitchen closets- for our recycling bin.  It's very accessible and yet, when you close the door to the closet-
it's gone :)

Note that on the right is where I keep bags to re-use too!

This is very simple, I know.  But I'm blogging it today because I have found sometimes, in my own life,
that when solutions are very simple,
a.k.a.- I slap my forehead and think, duh,
that they can be overlooked :)

So if you already do this-
Great for You, you HouseHold Tipper!

If you don't-
do it today,
it doesn't take too much effort,
and makes a world of difference :)

Happy HouseHold Tips!

Evaluate Your Space- in Drawers and Closets

Kitchen Wrap OrganizerLast Week was Decluttering Week on HouseHold Tips Blog.

In Keeping with Decluttering, we're talking about
drawers and closets today- and organizing,
because decluttering and organizing
go hand-in-hand.

First of all, closet and drawer organization are not static.  You can/should
re-evaluate how you are USING YOUR SPACE in closets and drawers
from time to time.

The BEST way, in my opinion, to organize closets and drawers,
is to EVALUATE Your Space...

Based on FREQUENCY OF USE.

How often do I use this?
What do I use it for?

A perfect example is a kitchen closet/pantry/shelving.
I recently re-evaluated one of my kitchen closets where I store platters and special dishes and special pots.  I found I was overloading that space with 'specialty stuff' that I don't use every day or even once a week.
So I went through every shelf,
*and things that I rarely use went downstairs,
*things that I don't use frequently went on the top shelf,
*things that I do use frequently went on the middle shelf,

*and things I use EVERY DAY,
went on the bottom shelf,
which is chest-high, so readily available,
like- wipes, trashbags, GladWare containers and lunchbags.

This way, things I use every day are easy to grab,
and not stuffed in a corner;
everything is easy to find!

Remember: FREQUENCY OF USE

It'll make your Life Easier!

The Adjustable Measuring Cup... I Found It!

KitchenArt Pro 2 Cup Adjust-A-Cup, Champagne Satin Finish

Hey There HouseHold Tippers!

Back on March 17th, I pointed out a great measuring spoon...

It's adjustable (what a great idea)!

I got a comment from a HouseHoldTips Reader,

Wishing that there was an 'Adjustable Measuring Cup'...

Well, there is.

And I found, very quickly, that there are 2 companies that make them!

Happy Measuring!

Thanks Rhonda for your comment!

A Great Measuring Spoon

KitchenArt Pro Adjust-A-Tablespoon, Champagne Satin FinishHello HouseHold Tippers!

Today, a quick little tip about measuring spoons-

Get an adjustable one!  I have this exact one, and it adjusts from
1 tablespoon to 1/2 teaspoon.  You just move the black, movable bar-
and presto!
Why have all those measuring spoons in your drawer?!

My mother-in-law got me this as a 'stocking stuffer' and I love it!

Happy Measuring!

Another Use for Toothbrushes-Clean Kitchen Floor Tiles

Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner with Bleach, 32 oz (Pack of 12)Since we've been talking about toothbrushes
as cleaning supplies lately,
I want to pass on another great tip!

Plain old dirt and stuff collects between kitchen tiles on the floor.
You probably don't even notice it until it gets pretty bad.
I notice it from time to time,
due to the fact I have 2 guys walking and running
around my house.

Here's the great 'quick tip'-

1st: spray your kitchen tiles with Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner Spray with Bleach.
My mother-in-law recommended this, and it works great.

2nd: Use your old toothbrush that I told you to save and use as a cleaning tool
to scrub between the tiles.

This TOTALLY WORKS!

It sounds like a lot of work, but it's not.
It goes very quickly!

And if you do it from time to time,
it'll never take that long :)

PooF!

That was easy!

Recycle Your Toothbrushes into Cleaning Supplies!

Preserve Toothbrushes, Ultra Soft Bristles, 6-Count PackageHello HouseHold Tippers!  We are talking about cleaning this week-
so let's get right down to it!
Here's a Great Quick HouseHold Tip-
When you change your toothbrush (every 4 to 6 months),
Don't throw your old one away,

Use it as what it is: a very small CLEANSING BRUSH!

Toothbrushes are great for scrubbing a set-in stain,
as well as a great cleaning tool for hard-to-reach corners.
And they are perfect for cleaning everyday build-up between kitchen tiles!
(more on that in a few days).

So, use what you already have on hand: your toothbrush!
This is a good reminder to CHANGE your toothbrush too!

And 1 more thing:  Have your cleaning toothbrushes WHERE YOU WILL USE THEM.
Keep 1 upstairs in your linen closet,
and 1 under your sink in the kitchen;

If you keep them in convenient places- YOU WILL USE THEM!

Happy Households!

Come back tomorrow for a 'secret cleaning tip' about toothbrushes!

How To Store Soft, Gooey Cookies... And KEEP them Soft

Omaha Steaks 30 Milk Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies
How do you KEEP cookies soft and tasting great?  Well, I’m here to share the wisdom and the bloglove…

I shared this on my mom blog- BananaBlueberry a while back,
and it deserves another 'share the wisdom' post!
I originally learned how to store cookies correctly from THE COMMENTS I received from a DC Metro Moms post I did way back in December of 2007 on gooey cookies…
In whatever container you store your cookies in-
Put a Piece of Bread in the Bottom.

The bread becomes stale and hard, and the cookies stay soft!!
And it’s so fantastic that I learned this amazing tip from comments to a post!
So thank you to another Nicole in California, KenandBelly over in the UK, and Andrea’s Recipes in the DC area for great comments!  Thank you again for your helpful hints!
Just put a piece of bread in your storage container to keep cookies soft-

PooF!  That was easy!

Goodbye to subpar cookies- Let the baking begin!

Have a 'Cleaning Bowl'

Trudeau Melamine Mixing Bowls, Set of 3This Tip is pretty straight-forward,
but it's amazing how 'little tips', like this one,
make life so much easier.
And that's really what we're about here at HouseHold Tips, after all!

Have a bowl, or a stack of different size bowls that are for NOTHING,
but cleaning.
No food is ever in these bowls.
Write 'CLEANING' on them (that's what I did).

Keep them under your sink, or somewhere else very accessible.

Whenever you get some kind of stain- Get Out The Bowl,

Mix Hydrogen Peroxide and dishwashing liquid,
And soak the article of clothing,
in the bowl.

POOF!

It comes out, even BLOOD.

and how fantastic it is as a stain remover!

So, Tip of The Day:

Have a designated 'Cleaning Bowl'; if you have it right there- you'll use it!

Easy!

'Buying a Dishwasher' Tip

When buying a dishwasher, remember what you are paying for:

NOISE... basically.

Recently I purchased a new dishwasher.  I went with a Frigidaire because it was discontinued and therefor, drastically reduced (to $179.00).  It frankly cost more to have it installed, but that's another story :)

It's a nice looking dishwasher, it's stainless steel and matches the rest of the kitchen appliances,

AND most importantly, cleans dishes well, without a lot of dishwashing detergent.
It has some kind of hyper-efficient cleaning mechanism that most dishwashers have now-a-days.

So is there any downside?  Well... noise.

It's pretty loud when it runs.  Let's put it this way- my husband joked that he's glad that our son is not a baby anymore, because the dishwasher would wake him up.  That's a little exaggerated,
but not completely off the mark.

So the tip for today sounds a lot like the Blender Tip I gave recently,
Yet different...

1. When buying Dishwashers AS WELL AS Blenders-
DO NOT go with a brand you have NEVER heard of,
you just don't start a 'dishwasher manufacturing business',
it must grow and develop-
go with a name you've heard of- like Frigidaire, WhirlpoolMaytag, etc.

2.  Think about noise level:
Most dishwashers clean dishes well;
at this point, in 2010, you're paying for a
lack of noise.
Ours is a little noisy, but you get used to it.
And it's still not as loud as that cheap inexpensive blender I bought!
On the other hand, an Electrolux dishwasher is SILENT,
and it's price tag reflects that.

It's your choice- go with what your lifestyle needs!

Happy HouseHolds!

Use Baby Wipes For Clean Ups Too!

Baby Wipes are a necessity in a house with babies, obviously.
But they are a good helper for any household.

I keep Pampers Baby Wipes in the bathroom for removing make-up,

and generic baby wipes in the pantry of my kitchen.  Why generic in the kitchen?

Because when it comes to baby wipes- you get what you pay for... Generic wipes are a little tougher and thicker- hence: perfect for cleaning up a countertop or wiping up a quick spill!

I know this isn't the 'greenest' practice in the world, but you can put them in with your recycling!

One Last Tip for Today:  Keep wipes (and any cleaning product) where you use it.  If you don't have space for it- make space.  If it's right there, you will use it; If it's not, it becomes inconvenient and a chore.

Don't 'Go Discount' on Blenders

You live, You learn.

Case in Point: this blender, pictured on the left.

I have, believe it or not, never bought a blender before last week.  We got one as a wedding present and I've been using it for the last 12 years.

The blender we got was a nice one, but not a 'ridiculously-priced gizmo that that blends, dices and tells you the time of day'.  It was a blender, and it lasted 12 years.  So, since I have no experience with buying blenders, I figured-

'A blender is a blender.'

And that's not quite true.  The blender to the left was on sale at Target for $13.99.  What did I learn?

DO NOT buy a blender that is $13.99.

It is SO LOUD, it deafens the ears.  It even scared my 6-year-old son, and he doesn't really 'get scared' anymore.  I'm not mentioning the brand name (which I'd never heard of- another red flag), (I think you can read it on the front of the blender), because they didn't do anything wrong- they are selling a very, cheap, blender;

It's just that I found out it is not worth saving a few dollars to go cheap on a blender.
It is worth a few more dollars to get a nice blender, that isn't CRAZY LOUD,
and rattles,
and scares small children.

So, I went back to Target and got an Oster 12-Speed Blender, that even crushes ice for smoothies...
in seconds... silently,

for $37.99.

You know what?  Just about ALL the blenders at Target were between $30 and $40 dollars.

This is probably a good price range to look in when buying a blender :)

Once again- You Live.  You Learn.

Enough Said.

Use Smaller Paper Towels

Here's an easy HouseHold Tip!

Make a point to buy those perforated,

half-sheet rolls of paper towels.

You usually only need a half a sheet anyway...

You'll save resources- you green, money-saving machine!

Make Your Kitchen Sink Look Better... Easily

A Theme here at HouseHold Tips is putting things away.
Get stuff off your counters.
Have a place for everything,
and decide on that place according to how often you use a thing.

In the case of dishwashing liquid-
we're making an exception.

I use dishwashing liquid all through the day, everyone does.
The vast majority of people sit their dishwashing liquid by their kitchen sink (I don't know where those other people put it).

If it has to be out- why not make it look good??!!

I buy blue dishwashing liquid to match my kitchen AND...
put it in this container to the left.
It looks so much nicer!

For the record- this is officially a 'Gourmet Oil Bottle' I bought at The Container Store for $9.99.

This little idea rocks because I love thinking 'outside the box' about organization and
you end up conserving dishwashing liquid because it comes out in drips and little streams!
